Google search optimised websites

What is an effective business website?

A website is a website. What is the difference? If you think about it, there is a world of difference. An effective business website is neither too long nor too short. It is built to a plan. Which means it contains “relevant” and “specific” content. Let’s take an example. You are in the business of supplying executive chairs. And your name is “Neelkamal Executive Chairs”. Naturally, there will be an inclination to call your website http://www.neelkamalexecutivechairs.com or something like that. This is where the problem begins. Your whole approach has to be consumer centric, or in this case, enquiry centric.

Sometime back, I was trying to create my website to rank (obviously) on the first page of Google. I discovered that the keyword “weekend advertising college” did not have much competition, and could be valuable in the future. So I immediately built a website by the name of www.weekendcollegeindia.weebly.com. My virtual company is called “The Advertising College”, but since I wanted to rank for “weekend advertising college”, I chose this name. Within days, I was & still rank on the first page. You can see the results.

The other thing that you can readily see is how relevant and specific content acts as your company’s advertisement. Google allows you 3 things. The heading, sub-heading and a two line description of your website (called “rich snippet”). This is extremely important & increases your chances of getting customers manifold. I have described my offering precisely in two lines & left no room for any doubt. Nor should you. The customer has no time, as we all know.

Plus, right on the first page of my website, I have integrated my logo, so there is no mistaking that the site belongs to The Advertising College. Remember, this little space on Google is your window to the world. And it is invaluable as a long term asset.

The other fallacy seems to about creating “exotic” sites with a lot of graphics, audio and video. That could be counter-productive, as the search engines base their rankings purely on the basis of text. So maybe your site is good looking with a lot of flashy graphics and videos, but that has got nothing to do with it being an effective business website. We believe that effective business websites are the ones that help grow your business. Period.
